What is Nutrition?

Nutrition is all about the foods and beverages we consume that are full of the vitamins and nutrients we eat everyday. Nutrients can include carbohydrates, fats, fiber, minerals, protein, vitamins, and water. Good nutrition includes eating the right foods in the right combinations, and malnutrition can result in chronic illnesses. Chronic illnesses can include depression, anxiety, heart disease, weight gain, and cancer. By making healthy food choices, you can improve your quality of life and overall health.

Physical Benefits of Nutrition

Besides maintaining a healthy weight, having proper nutrition in your diet can add many additional health benefits to your life. Some benefits include reducing the chance of stroke, heart disease, and diabetes, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, improve your immune system, and increase your energy level.

Our body produces energy by converting the foods we eat. By eating a nutritious diet, you allow your body to create the most possible energy throughout the day. This can help prevent you from feeling tired throughout the day and can help you sleep at night. With nutrition helping our immune systems, you are less likely to get sick throughout the year, and your body is able to fight off harmful viruses and bacteria.

Ways to have a Nutritional Diet

The basics of healthy eating are relatively simple, but it’s essential to incorporate them into every meal. Nutritional choices include:

  • Plenty of fruits and vegetables.
  • Whole grains.
  • Foods high in protein.
  • Limiting your intake of processed foods and trans fats.

Processed foods are high in added salt and sugar so that they can increase your weight gain, cholesterol, blood pressure, and the chance of diabetes.

Nutritional foods are high in fiber, protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, depending on what you eat. Whole grains such as quinoa, wild rice, and whole-grain bread are healthier than white bread and pasta. Additionally, certain fish, poultry, nuts, and tofu are all high in protein and should fill at least a quarter of your plate. It’s recommended to eat two servings of fish per week, but to eat protein everyday.
