Poison Ivy Prevention & Treatment Tips

imagesWhile enjoying the summer weather outdoors, you should always be aware of your surroundings. Avid nature-lovers, workers and children are more likely to come into contact with poisonous plants. If you have recently come into contact with a poison ivy plant and are starting to develop an irritating and uncomfortable rash, here are a few things you can do to prevent the rash from spreading and treat the discomfort.

To prevent the rash from spreading further:

  1. Immediately rinse your skin with warm, soapy water
  2. Wash your clothing and everything that may have come into contact with the plant
  3. Do not scratch, this can lead to infection

At-home treatments to help with the discomfort:

  1. Consider using a calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream
  2. Apply cool compresses to the itchy skin
  3. Consider taking antihistamine pills
